Hypermedia and discovery based learning
I thought that this journal article was very interesting. To be honest, I was unsure of exactly where the author was going, so the result was not predictable, and I liked that. I have often questioned discovery based learning in many subjects, and not just in regards to technology, because it seems silly to encourage someone to just "go for it" without necessary tools to make it a significant learning experience. I believe young people require instruction when learning new information. This applies to both technical skills and guidance in content. I believe that only at a college level (or maybe some 11th, 12th graders) are students prepared to synthesize material on their own without any prompt or guidance. However, I do believe that technology can help prepare students to do this, and of course, one cannot deny its existence. Educators have a responsibility to teach technology to their students because of its prevailance in the modern world. Personally, I would despise learning math on the computer, and really cannot even imagine how one might do that anyhow. I think exploration works well in the arts and creative writing, but somethings require cold hard facts. In this instance, how would one know what to look for without any previous knowledge. I regret to write that anyone who would promote this in education is wholly without common sense!
